What is Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)? MFA uses two (or more) methods to authenticate you. For example, a password (the first authentication method or factor) and a code via a SMS (the second authentication method or in techy parlance, factor).

The second factor could be a Google Authenticator number (like 123456) which changes every 30 seconds, a fingerprint or something else which is known or held only by you.

A good examples of MFA is the Australian MyGov website which requires a username, password and then a SMS code. Using MFA means that if your password is compromised, the attacker is still locked out of your system or account.
